What is Pocket Ledger?
Pocket Ledger is a simple replacement for all the complex accounting packages out there. It is geared toward self-employed folks with simple accounting needs, such as those who file Schedule C for their federal income taxes.
You can think of Pocket Ledger as written ledger - a simple place to input revenues and expenses - but with the power of the Cloud behind it.
How Do I Use Pocket Ledger?
The primary interface you will be using day-to-day is the Transactions page, where you will enter new transactions. Anything that could involve your taxes should be entered into the system, just as you would in a real ledger, or the complex accounting software you might be using now.
What are 'Categories'? How Do I Use Them?
These are how you sort your entries, so that your accountant can produce reports that they can use to prepare your taxes.
When you are entering transactions, please carefully consider how to categorize them. Be as specific as you can be; break everything down into as fine a category as you can.
Remember that your accountant can select multiple of your categories for a single report/total; so it's much better if you err on the side of over-categorizing.
You can also leave a questionable item uncategorized, and figure it out at a later date.
There are various reports you can use. More information on them coming!
